Osgood-Schlatter disease is named after physicians Dr. Robert Osgood and Dr. Carl Schlatter, who identified and defined the condition. It is a knee condition which is identified by a painful lump below the kneecap.

Osgood-Schlatter disease occurs mainly in children who take part in sports like basketball, soccer, ballet, figure skating, and other activities that involve jumping and running. It is most frequently seen in 13- or 14-year old boys and 11- to 12-year old girls because growth spurts usually take place during these periods.

Osgood-Schlatter disease causes pain in one or both knees, which can be mild, moderate, or severe in nature. It can flare up only during physical activity or be constantly present in a teen’s daily life for months. The swelling is often most prominent on the upper part of the shinbone right below the kneecap. As a result, surrounding muscles like the quadriceps (thigh muscles) may become strained. This knee pain increases during sports or activities like climbing stairs, jumping, and running; though it may subside somewhat after resting.
